An English actor, comedian, entertainer and cabaret performer, who began his career as a stag comedian after serving in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. He appeared in four Carry On films and played Chief Petty officer Pertwee in BBC Radio’s The Navy Lark for 18 years. Doctor Who

Pertwee first appeared in the first serial of season 7, “Spearhead from Space” – the first story to be filmed in colour. Having been exiled by the Time Lords, the Doctor is trapped on 20th century Earth and acting as scientific adviser to UNIT. Pertwee’s era introduced the Autons, Silurians, the Sea Devils, the Sontarans, and the Doctor’s nemesis, and fellow Time Lord, the Master. His last story was “Planet of the Spiders”, at the end of which, Tom Baker took over. In 1972, Pertwee released the single “Who is the Doctor”. Pertwee reprised his role in “The Five Doctors” (1983), in the stage play “Doctor Who – The Ultimate Adventure” (1989), two radio serials (1993 & 1996), and in the Children in Need/30th anniversary special “Dimensions in Time” (1993).
