Lost in Space is an American science fiction television series, created and produced by Irwin Allen, which originally aired between 1965 and 1968. The series was inspired by the 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson and a comic book published by Gold Key Comics titled Space Family Robinson. The series follows the adventures of the Robinsons, a pioneering family of space colonists who struggle to survive in the depths of space. The show ran for 83 episodes over three seasons; the first season (29 hour-long episodes) was filmed in black and white, and the 54 hour-long episodes of Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed in colour.

In Season 1, the Jupiter 2 lifts off on October 16, 1997, carrying a single family on a five and a half year journey to an Earth-like planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri. The Robinsons: John, his wife Maureen, and their three children, Judy, Penny and Will, are accompanied by US Space Corps Major Donald West. Also joining them – by accident – is Dr Zachary Smith who has reprogrammed the Jupiter 2’s environmental control robot to destroy critical systems after launch. His extra weight throws the ship off course and the expedition becomes lost in the depths of outer space. They crash land on the planet Priplanus where they have to survive a host of adventures.

Season 2 sees the repaired Jupiter 2 escaping the destruction of Priplanus, following a series of earthquakes, but crash landing on another strange world. In Season 3, Jupiter 2 travelled freely through space attempting to return to Earth while encountering adventures along the way.

Lost in Space was first broadcast in the UK on ITV between 1968 and 1970 and, for the most part, episodes were broadcast in the original US order. It would appear, however, that episodes one and two (“The Reluctant Stowaway” and “The Derelict”) were never broadcast on ITV, instead beginning with episode three, “Island in the Sky”. Broadcast of first-run episodes ceased with “The Mechanical Man” on May 18, 1970, and repeats from “Blast Off in Space” began.

The first repeat run on ITV ended on December 21, 1970, and then another run of repeats – from the third episode shown on British television, “The Hungry Sea” on January 4, 1971. “Welcome Stranger” was broadcast next, seemingly for the first time, before “My Friend, Mr Nobody” was repeated. The run, in broadcast order, continued until June 28, 1971, with “Follow the Leader”. The following two weeks, “The Phantom Family” and “The Mechanical Man” got their third showings but were then followed by first-time repeats from “The Astral Traveller” onwards.

On August 23, 1971, the episode “Hunter’s Moon” was broadcast for the first time. ITV’s repeat runs came to an end on January 10, 1972 with all episodes (except Season 1 episodes 1 & 2) broadcast at least once.
